Welcome to Year 4!
Welcome to Year 4! Your class teachers are Mrs Underwood and Miss Oliveira.
In 4U, our PE days are Tuesday and Friday. In 4O, our PE days are Wednesday and Friday. We do ask that children keep their PE kits at school during term time and take them home for a wash at the end of each half term.
Homework books will go home every Friday and we ask that every child selects one piece to complete from the menu each week. Please return the homework books by Wednesday so that your class teacher has time to see the amazing homework that has been completed before the books get sent home again on the following Friday.
Times table tests will happen every Wednesday. We will be sitting our MTC this summer so please do practice your times tables often. We really recommend playing on Times Table Rockstars as this is the most similar format to the MTC.
Spellings will now be self-assessed by the children as they use the words in their writing. There will be home learning tasks sent home twice a half term. These tasks are aimed to help children understand the meaning and context of the new vocabulary they are learning.
To link to our topic of Different Places, Similar Lives, our trip this half term is to Bett’s Park where we will be exploring the geography of our local area. This will be on Friday 1st March 2024 and we would really appreciate some parent volunteers to help us on the day.
Please note: This trip is outside so please send your children in appropriate outdoor footwear. Children will need to wear full school uniform and if the forecast looks rainy, please do send your child with a waterproof coat on the day.
English
In English, we will then be writing explanatory texts, using conjunctions and adverbs to express time and manner. We will then be considering the structure of an adventure story, incorporating dialogue to convey character and develop the narrative. Lastly, we will be writing and performing our own poems using figurative language and onomatopoeia. In our Reading lessons, we’ll be continuing ‘The Boy at the Back of the Class’ before diving into our next core text, Varjak Paw. We will be focusing on the difference between fact and opinion as well as looking at the mood, emotion and feeling of the narrative.
Maths
In Maths, we’ll be focussing on decimals and fractions, looking at tenths and hundredths. We aim for the children to be confident in converting decimals into fractions and vice versa. Then, we will be moving on to explore money. In these lessons, we will be converting between pounds and pence, using calculation and estimation. Finally, we will end the half term by learning about time on an analogue and digital clock.
History and Geography
This term we will be exploring our new topic of ‘All Aboard’ through history, geography and Design Technology. We will be looking at the development of the railways, travelling in Victorian times and considering why travelling on the railways would be a great experience.
Science
In Science, we’ll be identifying how water animals have evolved to survive in their habitats and exploring how habitats affect living things. We will then be able to put our new learning to use when we visit the Horniman Museum.
