What is Forest Friday/Welly Wednesday?

What is Forest Friday/Welly Wednesday?

Forest Friday uses the outdoor environment to help all children learn.  Children are encouraged to develop independence skills, make decisions, improve their self-confidence and raise their self-esteem through small achievable tasks. During sessions children are encouraged to make choices and follow their own learning in safe, secure, natural environment.

Who will lead Forest Friday?

The class teacher and Teaching Assistant will be present, at all times during Forest Friday sessions. A qualified Paediatric First Aider will be present at all times.

Where will Forest Friday take place?

Forest Friday will take place in the school's nature area within the school grounds.

Why are we doing Forest Friday?

Teachers and childcare workers involved with children who take part in Forest Friday report significant improvements in children's independence, self-esteem, confidence, social skills and concentration level.  The children will participate in an enjoyable experience that will help them with their learning and development in all areas.

How often will we do Forest Friday?

Sessions will be held once a week and will last for the whole Nursery session. Sessions will start after the October half term break unless advised otherwise.

What will the children need?

Forest Friday takes place whatever the weather so the children need to be appropriately dressed. They do not need to wear school uniform on Forest Friday days.  It is best to wear lots of layers including a vest, long sleeved t-shirt, jumper, long trousers and wellington boots with thick socks. A waterproof jacket and trousers or an all-in-one waterproof suit are essential as the children will get very wet and muddy even when it is not raining!

We have a limited supply of spares, so if you can provide your own that would be much appreciated. Please ensure all items of clothing are clearly named.

Will refreshments be provided?

Children will be provided with a warm drink and snack during their Forest Friday session.
